Reinforced slopes are a form of Mechanically Stabilized Soil that incorporate planar reinforcing elements like geogrids or double twist mesh in constructed earth sloped structures with inclinations of less than 70 degrees. Reinforced Soil Slopes allow structures to be built at angles steeper than the angle of repose of the backfill material. Reinforced Soil Slopes are further classified as shallow slopes (angle of slope less than 450) and steep slopes (angle of slope between 450 & 700)

Maccaferri’s Reinforced Slopes may be undertaken for a number of applications including:

  • Reinforcement of fill in new construction
  • Reinforcement of failed slopes
  • Reinforcement of existing ground in cut slopes
  • Reinforcement of existing cut  or fill slopes which are marginally stable

Maccaferri’s Reinforced Soil Slopes offer the following advantages:

  • Reduced Cost
  • Reduced Construction landtake & right of way acquisition
  • Increased land for development
  • Reduced consumption of quarried materials
  • Green facing to improved visual impact
  • Improved habitat for flora and fauna
  • High rate of construction
  • No specialist labour
  • Improved noise reduction
  • Lightweight plant required
  • Tolerance to differential settlements

Maccaferri offers three types of Reinforced Soil Slope Systems:

Green Terramesh System:  It consists of a single length of double twist mesh that forms the soil reinforcing base, upper reinforcing panels and the facing unit.  Geogrids may also be used in place of the double twist mesh used as the soil reinforcing base. The Geogrid tails/ reinforcing mesh are sandwiched between layers of compacted granular fill, reinforcing it. Factory fitted coir matting behind the front face stops the backfill from spilling out between the apertures in the mesh facing. A wedge of topsoil is placed behind and in contact with the blanket to provide a moisture and nutrient reservoir, essential for successful vegetation. No external support or shuttering is required when installing Green Terramesh® increasing considerably the speed of the installation. Welded steel reinforcement mesh & support brackets are factory assembled to provide rigidity to the faces. The steepest slope we recommend is 70° from the horizontal as it is difficult to successfully establish vegetation beyond this angle.

Soil Bag System: This is a wrap- around system where the reinforcing geogrid is wrapped around open net soil bags placed at the face of the slope. The bags are filled with suitable pre- seeded top soil to encourage the growth of vegetation at the face. In more recent years this technique has largely been replaced with less labour intensive Green Terramesh system.

Shallow Reinforced Slope: Reinforced Slopes flatter than 45 o may be designed without the wrap around or DT mesh facing. In such a case three- dimensional matting can be installed at the front face at the time of final top soiling operation to resist surface erosion and to promote the growth of healthy vegetation.
