Maccaferri Gabions are baskets made of double twisted steel woven wire mesh filled with stones at the site to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures such as retaining walls, channel linings, and weirs for erosion control projects.

Gabion baskets are available in a variety of different sizes. They come in 1/2 or 1 meter high, and 1.5, 2, 3, or 4 meters long.

Flexibility is an important advantage of  gabion structure. Since the baskets are constructed of galvanized mesh wire and filled with rock, the flexibility of a gabion structure allows it to withstand pressure without deforming, cracking or breaking as in the case of concrete and other materials. Hydrostatic pressure does not build up behind the gabion units because of their permeable nature. This ability to combine drainage and retention functions makes gabions ideal structures for slope stabilization.

The steel wire used in the manufacture of the gabion is heavily zinc coated soft temper steel. A PVC coating is then applied to provide added protection for use in polluted environments where soil or water are acidic: in salt or fresh water, or wherever the risk of corrosion is present.  The mesh panel are reinforced at all edges with wires of a larger diameter than that used for manufacturing the mesh, to strengthen them and to facilitate construction.
