Paralink™ geogrids are planar structures consisting of a monoaxial array of composite geosynthetics strips used in basal platforms over piles, soft ground or over voids caused by mineworkings, caves and so on. Each single longitudinal strip has a core of high modulus, low creep polyester yarn tendons encased in a tough, durable polyethylene sheath. . Polyester fibres carry the mechanical load while the polyethylene sheath maintains the shape of the material and provides durability. The polyester fibres used in the manufacture of the strips have a number average molecular weight (Mn) of greater than 25,000 and a carboxyl end group count (CEG) of less than 30 as required for soil reinforcement applications.

The single strips are connected by low strength cross laid polyethylene elements which give a grid like shape to the composite. Paralink™ has superior unidirectional strength and is available as a custom-made product in a range of strengths as between 100 kN/m ultimate up to 1350 kN/m. Bidirectional strength can be obtained by installing two Paralink™ layers at right angles to each other. Paralink™ is so durable and tough that it can be placed directly in contact with piles in a piled embankment.
Paralink

By using Paralink™ reinforcement in piled embankments, we are often able to reduce the amount of piles required beneath the embankment. This can lead to significant cost savings on the overall project. The Paralink™ provides a 'bridge', transferring loads from the embankment into the piles.
Paralink

This hard yet flexible protective shell greatly enhances the damage installation partial factors of safety. The result is that to offer the same reinforcing function, a lower ultimate tensile strength Paralink™ can be used, than a woven unprotected polyester geotextile.

Paralink™ is suitable for structural applications where a long term design life (50-120 years) is required.

Typical applications are:
  • Reinforcement of embankments over soft soils.

  • Reinforcement of embankments constructed over areas prone to subsidence; if subsidence occurs then the Paralink™ bridges across the void (so formed) thus maintaining support for the embankment.

  • Reinforcement of the foundation of piled embankments; Paralink™ assists in the transfer of the embankment loadings directly onto the piles so that the foundation soil supports a negligible load improving the stability and reducing settlements.

  • Steep slope construction as main reinforcement in combination with Terramesh units or ParaGrid.
