Maccaferri gabion is a rectangular wire mesh box made from double twisted hexagonal mesh of steel wire, additionally reinforced by selvedges of heavier wire running along the edges and by transverse diaphragms filled with rock at the project site to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures such as retaining walls for commercial, industrial and road projects. They are also used for erosion control for bank stabilization, channel linings, and weirs. These mesh boxes are delivered to site flat-packed, whereupon they are assembled, lifted into position, and filled with durable rock. Lacing and bracing wire are used to assemble and join the gabion units. Woven units can also be easily amended on site and shaped to suit project requirements.

Maccaferri is known as the inventor of the modern gabion, and held the original gabion patent awarded in the late 1890s. Maccaferri mechanically woven double twist woven mesh gabions are ideal for accommodating differential settlement, and will not unravel or unzip even when exposed to extreme loads or when wires within the mesh are cut or damaged.

Maccaferri gabions are available as galvanised or with an additional polymer protective coating. Maccaferri strongly recommends a polymer coated galvanised unit for improved design life in aggressive environments.
